If you’re staying at the Nu Hotel in downtown Brooklyn, the closest, best tasting, and most affordable food option right across Atlantic Avenue is Soul Spot Restaurant. But don’t head over there expecting to be wowed by a fancy ambiance and waiters hovering on the periphery. Inside, the tiny dining area, bare-bones and fluorescent-lit, has just enough room for three tables in front of the counter area which displays all of the menu offerings behind Plexiglas.
And what you’ll see are home cooked soul food favorites that borrow from Low Country, Afro-Caribbean, and even African culinary traditions. Just ponder and point out what you want. That’s the tough part! Classics include Southern fried chicken, baked or fried catfish, oxtail, and chicken & dumplings. I recommend their chicken and fish special which pairs freshly fried Whiting with your choice of lively seasoned roasted chicken or southern dipped fried chicken. My other favorites are their smothered turkey wings, jerk chicken, and catfish fillets coated with a zesty crumb mixture. Thick yet moist slabs of meat loaf slathered with a tasty bright red glaze quell the hunger goblins as well!
Sides range from fresh and smoky collard greens, fried plantains, okra w/ stewed tomatoes, mashed potatoes, and cinnamon-spiced yams that pack a punch with each mouthful. For dessert, if you still have room, pick from a fresh baked assortment of cakes, peach cobbler, and top notch banana pudding. I bet you thought I’d forget to discuss the affordability…a main dish, two side, and a slice of cake or pie rarely hovers much beyond $20. So check out their menu, and get ready!
