Did you ever eat something that tasted so wholesome that you just knew it had to be good for you? I had one of those moments today when I tried one of Pure Chocolate‘s (quality chocolatier based in Quincy MA) lager tartarugas. Commonly known by the English equivalent “chocolate turtles”, tartarugas combine pecans, caramel, and chocolate. The flavor combination is tantalizing enough even if it isn’t a gourmet candy. But as I savored Pure Chocolate’s morsel, one overpowering thought seized my mind…this is way too good to let guilt get in the way!
Pure Chocolate takes no shortcuts when making their chocolates. All of them
use smooth Belgian chocolate with the best ingredients. Nowhere is this more evident than after taking a bite out of the tartaruga. The generous chocolate coating is rich, smooth, and not too icky sweet…sophisticated chocolate that has nothing to hide. The caramel is gooey quickly melting in your mouth and doesn’t leave a sugary coating on the tongue. And the specially roasted pecans are combined with cinnamon, sea salt, and Sam Adams lager giving the candy a whole new flavor dimension while remaining true to it’s chocolate roots. Although the pecans are essentially “drunken nuts”, they are extremely light with a just-out-of-the-shell texture.
I’m anticipating your next question, “ How can I get my hands on these Pure Chocolate treats and what other types do they make?” No need to hunt them down in a local shop since they sell direct via their website cutting out the distributor. Perhaps with 6 tartarugas going for $20 along with others like brownie pops for $20 each and a dozen peanut butter cups for $40, these candies aren’t for the budget minded. However, I’d rather have quality over quantity any day! I think I can cut that brownie pop into small bite size pieces and make it last through several desserts…or could I?
