Lately I’ve been getting my weekly bread supply from a bakery that sells it fresh-baked in wood fired ovens. The loaves are stacked in baskets and are all gone within 2 days. The main reason they disappear so quickly is the flavor and hearty ingredients that stick with you hours after eating a slice. No preservatives, bleached flour, or air pumped into these babies! It’s a good thing they’re in demand because they wouldn’t last on the shelf more than a week before turning as hard as bricks. In other words, the real deal…
But what about many of us who simply don’t have the time or access to a local bakery? Does that mean we have to settle for mediocre lifeless bread? Thankfully not! Nature’s Pride 100% Whole Wheat with Flax made with pure olive oil tastes just as hearty. And with a whopping 22 grams of whole grain per slice, it is commercially baked bread that stands up to the late morning empty stomach syndrome. Besides toasting a slice and spreading with a suggestion of jam or butter, I put this bread to the test with my French Toast recipe served up with a side of Irish bangers. Sprinkled with cinnamon and drizzled with pure maple syrup, I got the perfect combination of Sunday morning decadence along with Monday rush healthful sensibility.
Give this a try next weekend:
6 slices Nature’s Pride Hearty Wheat With Flax
½ cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon nutmeg
Olive oil as needed to coat skillet
Heat cast iron skillet on medium setting coated with virgin olive oil
Mix ingredients in bowl
Dip slices in mixture and place in heated skillet
Let cook on each side until brown
Sprinkle with cinnamon and warm pure Maple syrup to taste
Serve with grilled Irish bangers or other favorite breakfast meat.
