It’s about time that rum extricated itself from the fruity confines of tropical-themed cocktails. Sure Planters Punches, Cubanos, or Dark and Stormys are tasty but how about a cocktail recipe that takes rum in a new direction? After all, you wouldn’t keep pairing wine with only cheeses and select hors d’oeuvres would you? Now the rich flavor of Flor de Cana, Nicaragua’s national rum, gives you an excuse to explore the more diverse capabilities that this foundation liquor has to offer.
Flor de Caña boasts a heritage dating back to 1890 at the San Antonio Sugar Mill, in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua. Today the fifth generation of the Pellas family continues producing this single estate rum using the finest molasses from sugar cane harvested in fields next to the facility. Production still follows centuries-old guidelines for 5-time distillation, and slow-aging it to an rich-flavored amber in small American white oak barrels. Not only are no additives used but the rum sits in non air-conditioned traditional barrel houses providing a natural, undisturbed environment for the full flavor to unfold.
The Cuban Sandwich Cocktail mixes up a meat infusion, savory spices, and non-traditional garnishes for surprisingly tasty results. Give this a try:
Cuban Sandwich Cocktail
*1 part mustard brushed ham infused Flor de Caña Grand Reserve 7 Year
1 part lime or lemon juice
1 part simple syrup
1/4 part kosher dill pickle juice
*Brush a half pound ham with honey mustard and roast to caramelize ham. Slice the ham thinly and place strips in a 500 mL Mason jar. Pour Flor de Caña Grand Reserve 7 Year into the jar until the ham strips are completely covered. Refrigerate for one week and strain contents of the jar over a cheese cloth, reserving the liquid.
Add all of the above ingredients to a cocktail shaker and shake well. Strain into a rocks glass filled with cracked ice. Garnish with a skewer of Swiss cheese cubes and a toasted bread stick.
